What are menthol and camphor?

Menthol is originally derived from peppermint oil, and camphor from the wood of the camphor tree—today, both are often produced synthetically in consistent quality. In lip care and body products, they are used in low concentrations and serve a clearly defined purpose: they create a cooling, tingling sensation on the skin.

The mechanism behind this is well understood: Menthol and camphor bind to the skin's cold receptors—the same sensors that respond to low temperatures. The brain registers "cool," even though the skin temperature hasn't actually changed.
