Retinol: The Gold Standard for Anti-Aging

Retinol: A golden drop of oil on a glass plate – BONSANA Active Ingredient Encyclopedia

Active Ingredients Glossary · R

INCI: Retinol / Retinyl Palmitate

Retinol is the most extensively studied anti-aging ingredient in cosmetics: It accelerates skin renewal, smooths fine lines, and refines the skin's texture. However, it requires patience—and a proper adjustment period.

Skin TypeNormal to resilient skin; sensitive skin: use gradually
Concentration0.1–1%
RoutineOnly in the evening; SPF required in the morning
Adjustment period2–4 weeks; start with 2–3 evenings per week

What is retinol?

Retinol is a form of vitamin A and belongs to the retinoid family. In the skin, it is converted through intermediate steps into retinoic acid—the form that boosts cell renewal and can stimulate the skin's own collagen production. Retinyl palmitate is the mildest ester precursor with a correspondingly weaker effect; retinol itself is the standard in cosmetics. The more direct the form, the more effective it is—and the higher the potential for irritation.

Effect: What's Proven

Five out of five bars: No other cosmetic active ingredient has been so well documented over decades. Proven benefits include the smoothing of fine lines, a more even complexion, and the reduction of photoaging—usually visible after 8–12 weeks of consistent use. Important to note: Cosmetic retinol works slowly and within limits. Deep wrinkles will not disappear with it.

Application & Combination

Retinol belongs in your evening routine: UV light destabilizes the active ingredient, and your skin becomes more sensitive to light while using it. Start with two to three evenings a week and a low concentration; only increase the frequency once your skin remains calm. Mild redness or flaking in the first few weeks is normal—sunscreen is a must in the morning.

Good Combinations

Hyaluronic acid & ceramides — help ease the skin's adjustment

Niacinamide — soothes and strengthens the skin barrier

Sunscreen the next morning

Note

! Do not use on the same evening as AHA/BHA peels or high-dose vitamin C

! Avoid retinoids during pregnancy and while breastfeeding

! Gentle alternative: Bakuchiol — plant-based, similar efficacy profile, minimal irritation

Frequently Asked Questions About Retinol

How often should I use retinol at first?

Two to three evenings a week is enough to start with. If your skin remains calm for two to four weeks, you can slowly increase the frequency to every evening.

Why should retinol only be used in the evening?

UV light destabilizes the active ingredient, and your skin is more sensitive to the sun while using it. Apply it in the evening and use sunscreen in the morning—this combination is a must.

My skin is red and flaky—should I stop using it?

Mild redness and flaking in the first few weeks are normal. Reduce the frequency, focus on moisturizers with hyaluronic acid or ceramides—and take a break if you experience severe irritation.

Retinol or bakuchiol—which one is right for me?

Retinol has the strongest scientific backing, but it takes some getting used to. Studies show that bakuchiol has a similar efficacy profile with significantly less irritation—ideal for sensitive skin, beginners, and during pregnancy and breastfeeding.
