Panthenol (Provitamin B5): A Soother for Stressed Skin

Panthenol (provitamin B5): clear gel drops on a gray base—a soothing moisturizing ingredient

Ingredient Encyclopedia · P

INCI: Panthenol

Panthenol is the unsung hero among skin-soothing ingredients: This provitamin B5 is found in countless creams, serums, and lotions—often without being prominently listed on the packaging. It moisturizes, soothes stressed skin, and supports the regeneration of the skin barrier. Unspectacular, but exceptionally well-documented.

What is panthenol?

Panthenol is the precursor to pantothenic acid—better known as vitamin B5. When you apply panthenol, your skin converts it into pantothenic acid, which plays a role in numerous metabolic processes. In skincare, panthenol plays two roles: As a humectant, it attracts water and locks it into the upper layers of the skin. At the same time, it makes the skin smoother and supports a healthy skin barrier.

You'll find panthenol across all product categories: in facial serums and creams as well as in shower gels, after-sun products, and hair and scalp care. The reason for its ubiquity is simple: the active ingredient is stable, exceptionally well-tolerated—and it works.

Effect: What the Evidence Shows

Four out of five bars: Panthenol is one of the best-documented skincare active ingredients of all. Studies show that it measurably increases skin moisture, reduces water loss through the skin, and supports the regeneration of a stressed skin barrier. Its soothing effect on irritated, reddened skin has also been well studied—which is why panthenol appears so often in skincare products used after shaving, sun exposure, or exfoliation. What panthenol is not: an anti-aging ingredient. It doesn't smooth deep wrinkles or lighten pigment spots—but it reliably delivers what stressed skin needs most.

Usage & Combination

It couldn't be simpler: Panthenol fits into any morning or evening routine, requires no adjustment period, and doesn't make the skin more sensitive to the sun. Typical concentrations range from 1–5%—more is rarely necessary. Panthenol is particularly useful as a soothing counterbalance to more active ingredients like retinol or acids.

Good Combinations

Hyaluronic acid—the classic moisturizing duo, often combined in a serum

Niacinamide—double support for the skin barrier

Retinol & acids – panthenol helps mitigate potential irritation

Note

! Contact allergies are very rare but possible—test new products on the inner elbow first

! In cases of acute skin conditions, cosmetics are no substitute for a medical evaluation

Frequently Asked Questions About Panthenol

Is panthenol the same as vitamin B5?

Almost: Panthenol is the precursor (provitamin) of pantothenic acid, also known as vitamin B5. On the skin, panthenol is converted into the vitamin—which is why the terms are often used interchangeably in skincare.

What skin types is panthenol suitable for?

It's suitable for virtually all skin types—dry, sensitive, and stressed skin benefit the most. Panthenol is also a tried-and-true classic in hair and scalp care.

Can I combine panthenol with retinol?

Yes, very well, in fact. Panthenol soothes and supports the skin barrier—ideal for mitigating potential irritation caused by retinol or acids.

How quickly does panthenol work?

You'll feel the moisturizing effect right away. For visibly soothed, more resilient skin, expect to see results after a few days to a few weeks of regular use.
