Aloe Vera: The Classic Moisturizer
Active Ingredients Glossary · A INCI: Aloe Barbadensis Leaf Juice Hardly any other plant-based active ingredient is as well-known as aloe vera: The gel from the fleshy leaves of this desert plant moisturizes, cools, and soothes—from head to toe. A classic for millennia, it is also firmly established in modern body care and K-Beauty. Profile Research Findings Effective against Dryness, tightness, and sun-damaged skin Skin Type All, especially dry and stressed skin Concentration As juice/gel; no fixed standard value Routine Morning and evening, as needed Adjustment period None required What is aloe vera? Aloe vera is a succulent plant that stores a water-rich gel in its thick leaves—its survival strategy in dry regions. It is precisely this gel that is extracted for use in cosmetics: on the INCI list, it is listed as Aloe Barbadensis Leaf Juice. It consists of over 98 percent water, along with polysaccharides (complex sugars), amino acids, vitamins, and minerals. The polysaccharides are the key: They bind water to the skin and form a light, breathable moisturizing film—which is felt as the typical cooling, soothing aloe effect. From after-sun products to shower gels and sheet masks, aloe is therefore one of the most widely used plant-based ingredients in cosmetics. Effect: What's Been Proven Three out of five bars—solid, but not outstanding. Its moisturizing effect is well documented: Studies show that aloe gel increases skin moisture and makes dry skin more supple. The soothing, cooling effect on stressed skin—such as after sun exposure or shaving—is also well understood and widely described. The evidence is less clear when it comes to broader claims such as anti-aging or acne treatment: Only small studies with mixed results exist in these areas. To sum it up fairly: Aloe vera is a reliable classic for moisturizing and soothing, but it's not a miracle cure. Usage & Combination Aloe vera is as simple as it gets: suitable for daily use, no adjustment period required, and no known interactions with other skincare ingredients. Use it on the face as a mask or light moisturizer, and on the body in shower products and lotions—especially soothing after sun exposure, exercise, or shaving. Aloe cools and soothes sun-damaged skin and relieves tightness—it's a tried-and-true classic for this purpose. However, severe sunburn with blisters requires medical treatment, and sunscreen remains the best protection. Is aloe vera suitable for sensitive skin? Generally, yes—aloe is considered very well-tolerated. As with all plant extracts, contact allergies are possible: Therefore, test new products on a small area of skin first. Can I use aloe vera every day? Yes, without any problems, both in the morning and at night. Aloe doesn't require a build-up period, doesn't make the skin more sensitive to light, and can be combined with virtually all other active ingredients. What should I look for in aloe products? Check its position in the INCI list: If Aloe Barbadensis Leaf Juice appears near the top, it means the product contains a significant amount. When combined with niacinamide or panthenol, its soothing effect is effectively enhanced.
