INCI: Centella Asiatica Extract / Madecassoside
Hardly any other active ingredient epitomizes Korean skincare quite like Cica. The extract from Centella asiatica—also known as tiger grass—soothes irritated, reddened skin and supports the regeneration of a stressed skin barrier. It’s not a miracle cure, but it’s a reliable ally for sensitive skin.
What is Cica?
Cica is short for Centella asiatica, a herbaceous plant that has been used in Asian medicine for centuries to treat irritated skin. In modern cosmetics, it is used as a total extract or in the form of isolated individual compounds—primarily madecassoside, along with asiaticoside and asiatic acid. The nickname “tiger grass” stems from the legend that injured tigers are said to have rolled around in the herb.
Cica has become a major trend in K-Beauty: Korean brands have built entire skincare lines around this active ingredient—from toners to creams to sunscreen. Meanwhile, Cica has also become a staple in many European formulations for sensitive skin and skin prone to redness.
Effects: What the Evidence Shows
The body of research is solid but not outstanding. Laboratory data and small-scale clinical studies show that Centella extracts can reduce redness, minimize moisture loss through the skin, and support the regeneration of the skin barrier; madecassoside has been the most extensively studied. What’s missing are large, independent studies with a large number of participants. Fair summary: Cica reliably soothes and is exceptionally well-tolerated—but those expecting dramatic anti-aging effects are looking in the wrong place.
Application & Combination
Cica is straightforward: it can be used in the morning and evening, requires no adjustment period, and does not increase sun sensitivity. The active ingredient serves as a soothing staple in virtually any skincare routine—especially on days when the skin is stressed by exfoliation, retinol, shaving, or weather conditions.

Is Cica suitable for sensitive skin?
Yes, Cica is one of the most well-tolerated active ingredients available and is specifically formulated for sensitive, irritated skin. As with any new skincare product, however, it’s important to test it on a small area of skin first.
How quickly does Cica work?
You’ll often feel an immediate soothing effect right after application. For visible improvements in redness and skin barrier health, expect to see results after two to four weeks of regular use.
Can I use Cica every day?
Yes, in the morning and at night. Cica doesn’t require a build-up period, doesn’t make the skin more sensitive to light, and has no known interactions with other skincare ingredients.
What is madecassoside?
Madecassoside is the most extensively studied active compound derived from Centella asiatica. If it appears on the INCI list, the product contains a concentrated Centella active ingredient—a good sign for formulations designed to specifically soothe the skin.
