Finding the perfect hair shampoo: The ultimate guide for every hair type

A hair shampoo can actually do much more than most people realise. These cleaners do a great job – and each one works in its own way. However, with over 640 different shampoos on the market, finding the right product can quickly become a challenge.

The focus is not only on cleansing, but also on special care needs: Repair shampoos repair cracks in the keratin layer, colour shampoos protect against UV radiation, and volume shampoos make the hair appear fuller. It is therefore important to know your own hair type as well as the different shampoo categories in order to make the best choice.

Shampoo for every hair type: the most important categories

The world of hair shampoos is more diverse than a rainbow after a summer shower. Each hair type category requires its own specialised care – one all-purpose product cannot possibly cover all needs. Here is a detailed overview of the most important shampoo categories for every hair type.

Repair shampoo for damaged hair

Damaged, brittle and dry hair urgently needs repair. A high-quality repair shampoo can repair damaged hair by up to 45% after just one application. These formulas often contain valuable active ingredients such as camomile, amaranth or proteins that strengthen the damaged hair structure and restore its natural balance.

Hair particularly benefits from repair shampoos after frequent heat styling or chemical treatments. The best products not only make the hair more resilient, but also give it new shine and vitality.

Colour shampoo for dyed hair

Dyed hair needs special care, as colouring opens the outer cuticle layer. Colour shampoos are specially formulated to seal colour pigments deep in the hair and maintain colour intensity over many washes. They also protect against UV radiation, which causes colours to fade.

Many colour shampoos contain natural extracts that strengthen the hair’s protective barrier and provide intensive moisture. The result is a smooth hair surface with silky softness and radiant shine. Ideally, dyed hair should not be washed too often in order to protect it.

Volumising shampoo for fine hair

Fine hair often appears flat and lifeless. Volumising shampoos contain ingredients such as plant proteins, keratin or polymers, which coat the hair during washing and provide more volume. Some products lift the hair directly at the root, others enhance the structure with wheat proteins or ceramides.

Important for fine hair: Only use a small amount of shampoo so as not to weigh the hair down. Most volumising shampoos are formulated silicone-free, as silicones can weigh down the hair – which would be counterproductive to building volume.

Anti-grease shampoo for oily hair

Oily hair can be frustrating. Anti-grease shampoos with mild, plant-based surfactants gently free the scalp from excess sebum and have been shown to reduce oil content – in combination with a suitable scalp treatment by an average of 27% after two weeks of use.

These shampoos often contain extracts such as seaweed, horsetail or lemon balm, which regulate sebum production and leave a fresh feeling. Important: Do not massage the scalp too vigorously when washing, as this can further stimulate the sebaceous glands.

Anti-dandruff shampoo for sensitive scalp

Dandruff is not only a visual nuisance, but often a sign of an imbalance of the scalp. There are two main types:
Dry dandruff are small, white and fall onto the shoulders.
Oily dandruff are larger, yellowish and stick to the scalp.

Effective anti-dandruff shampoos contain active ingredients such as selenium DS or salicylic acid, which fight dandruff and relieve itching. They promote the balance of the scalp microbiome and at the same time ensure shiny, easy-to-comb hair.

Clarifying shampoo for deep cleansing

Clarifying or detox shampoos are the deep cleansers among hair products. They thoroughly remove residues such as styling products, silicones or excess sebum from the hair and scalp. They are ideal, especially before colouring, to optimally prepare the hair.

The paraben-free formulas have a clarifying and antioxidant effect, allowing the scalp to regenerate. However, they should be used sparingly – once a week or monthly is sufficient, as excessive use can have a drying effect.

How to correctly determine your hair type

Choosing the right hair shampoo starts with understanding your own hair type. Just like a tailor-made suit, not every product suits every hair. What counts is a precise analysis of hair structure, thickness and scalp.
